The typical duties of an SA, at least the FTE salaried ones, are any task that the company wants you to do. Companies are very careful to advertize DBA and SA jobs as exempt managment jobs. This means that you have absolutely none of the legal protections that hourly workers can claim under federal working laws.

Again, it depends upon the company and how lowlife managment is. I support applications as well as the general health of the systems, but because I only work as an hourly contractor, they must pay me sweetly for the diverse nature of their needs. You FTE salaried guys continue to get screwed.

Sounds like a less than desirable place to work. Start looking, and whatever you do, don't let your annoyance with your current situation show thru when you're talking to potential clients. However, feel out the potential clients very carefully to make sure that you're not walking out of this bad scene into another one.
