If the session has done a lot work which hasn't been commited but update the data blocks, the data becomes inconsistent once the session is killed. SO for long running session the changes to the data blocks should be rolled back. Till all the information is rolled back the session are marked killed but still exist in the session table.

Another note is that if the session has aquired any locks they are still valid till the session disappeared from the session table. Oracle rollback segments depend a lot on the session information and you have to be tolerent to that.
