If the system is on a Unix platform, you can look in the ORATAB file. This file is generally found in /var/opt/oracle or /etc. This file (if the DBA has set things up right) will list all databases on the system, which ORACLE_HOME is used for that db, and if it will start on bootup (Y or N flag). On a NT platform, you will need to check the Control Panel --> Services. Scroll down until you see Oracle<SID>Service or Oracle<SID>Start. For every database, it will be a different <SID>.
