I had a similar problem with the control file and it had to deal with a bug with my Oracle version (8.0.4) on my platform (Solaris) and my current block size (16K). I'm not saying that this is your problem, but the only way to know for sure is to call Oracle Support. You did purchase a support contract didn't you?
