Snapshots

I am wondering what would cause snap shot degradation (time for refresh
of snap shot) besides network or size of the snap shot?  I work with
snapshots on a daily basis, getting a snapshot from the east coast to
the west coast, and sometimes it works within 30 minutes, at other
times it takes hours.  Can anyone help?
