Sorry but to do a hot backup you must be in archivelog mode. An alternative is to use some form of cloning, or mirror-breakmirror-backup-rebuildmirror type of solution. to backup the instance, but you MUST test it thoroughly Why don't you want to be in archivelog ? you could loose valuable data if you don't !
