see http://www.laoug.org/presentation.htm Richard Niemiec's presentation held at 10/28/99 - a lot of hints - or just better: buy his book Oracle performance tuning (chapter 4: tuning the init.ora)- it's worth every cent and probably the best book edited in the Oracle series up to now. But in the long run you'll get the greatest gains from statement tuning and not from instance tuning. Of course, Niemiec also covers that topic.
