That won't work -that will tell you the database name, which isn't the same thing as the Instance name at all!! Convention has it that the instance and the database should be named the same, but since there's no enforcement of that, it would be dodgy to rely on the v$database view. As others have suggested, V$INSTANCE is the way to go.
