OK guys, thanks. Your advice is good but you're confirming what I thought - there is no setup that has multiple copies of the same database and which lets you switch randomly back and forth among them. I was thinking of something along the lines Rich suggested: multiple database servers for different functions so that the loss of one wouldn't bring down the web site, just one particular application. Also, I have to read more, but the ability to have multiple caches on separate iAS servers might help.
What does Amazon do? Or MSN or Yahoo or ?
