I had problems with my initial attempt at installation - I had expanded the file to a CD, and then copied the directory structure to my install area, the thing of it was I didn't make an ISO CD - so I ended up putting the tgz file on the CD, and expanding it from there onto my Linux RH2 box, (as the oracle user) - and it worked from there. The installer has to create some files and directories for it to run because the JRE it needs is bundled.

I have talked to folks that had to unset the java env vars for the installer to run, but I did not need to do this.
