Make sure you take a full backup before
upgrading. I think one of the Oracle stars sent us a message some time back about
upgrades from 8.1.5 to 8.1.6 resulting in the database not opening because:

  1. 8.1.5 can soft-corrupt datablocks
  2. 8.1.6 always checks the system tablespace for corrupted blocks and won't start it there are any.

There is, however, a hidden parameter that may get around this, named something like:

    _always_check_system_ts_for_corruption
