weird missing datafile question

I've been doing some experimenting lately and noticed some "strange" behavior.

For example:
I delete my users01.dbf datafile while the database is open. I still am able to make modifications to the tables in this tablespace (due the changes being buffered in memory and not being written to the datafiles directly).

Next, I issue an ALTER SYSTEM SWITCH LOGFILE - which should force the dirty buffers to be written out the the datafiles, right? So how come I don't get any error messages when I do this, even though the users01.dbf file is gone??? The switch logfile completes successfully.

I find this perplexing.
