For Oracle 8, Oracle have developed STATSPACK (replacement for BSTAT/ESTAT) which includes a script to automatically schedule data collection (which is stored database tables) using DBMS_JOB.

There's an excellent article in Oracle Magazine describing how to install and configure STATSPACK.
