I think this might be due to a known bug in the context server. Do you have data flowing into the indexed tables at the same time as the indexes are being updated ? If so, I think this causes a deadlock under some circunstances. Oracle support should be able to confirm if this is the case for you. The bug is fixed in Oracle 8.1.6.
