Tony,

I can report that my databases experience the same behavior (that is, physical i/o against the control files every couple of seconds) continuously, even when there is no user activity on the database.

I assumed this is normal, expected behavior, but I don't understand why (or what information) Oracle needs to read from or write to the control files at that frequency.
