I don't think that you can install 8i without cde working, because 8i has new graphical universal installer, written in Java. You need some Java Runtime installed in advance, too.

And you have to configure networking services on your server before installing oracle, that is what xhosts is for, I believe.

And, though I have little experience with AIX, and that's not with Oracle on AIX, I think its very possible that you'll find a moderate list of AIX patches to download and patch your AIX system before installing Oracle.
