OFFLINE DROP

Here's an interesting scenario:

We have two datafiles for an index table space. One of the datafiles is empty. We performed an alter database offline drop to drop the empty datafile. Instead of it going offline and being dropped, it went into recover mode.

Question: Is there a way to drop the empty datafile without blowing away the tablespace?

P.S. Kindly reply to this post and to my e-mail address at mgallego_at_ahs.llumc.edu. Thanks!
