archive log files

On one of the 8.1.6 databases I'm running I have archive log mode running. Its on a wintoy NT box. The problem is that the archive destination dir. is getting very large in size. There is a fair amount of dml being run on this instance. What is the easiest way to remove the log files. The box is tape backed up cold each night. Can I simply just delete the logs or will this screw up the database. I want to keep about 2 days worth of log files on the machine for backup reasons. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

Thanx
Jeff
