Network computers. Larry Ellison and Oracle were/are big proponents of the concept. Actually, as networks improve, companies may eventually move in that direction (netboot a PC-like workstation/graphics-terminal with decent CPU and RAM, but no disk). It really can ease central management of workstations if done properly, but it hasn't taken off because obviously Microsoft has little interest in this model - they like selling a full OS for each workstation.
