I put the 8.0.5 client on my box along with 8.1.6. I still can't connect using MS's ODBC driver. I suspect that something maybe in the registry is pointing to the 8.1.6 stuff instead of the 8.0.5 stuff.

Do you have any idea as to what may need to be changed?
