Modifying Red Hat 6.x Linux kernel paramters to support Oracle 8.1.6

Need help understanding how to configure the Linux kernel for Oracle. I 
do not know what syntax to use when modifying the files sem.h, etc... 
and how to rebuild the kernel. On other Unix's I just modified the 
/etc/system file. Any help would be appreciated.
