Raw is better suited toward write access, than is ufs.

Note, you can try using the readv option to increase reads with ufs.

I agree with the others, and for a somewhat different reason. You are the temporary DBA, changing to raw requires a more care and feeding, and the new DBA may not have those abilities on day one.

In all the reading I have done, most believe that using the Unix buffers is ultimately better, than turning them off. This is due to the read ahead capabilities. Again I would concur with the previous posters, and besides an extra CPU(which is always great), I would check the RAM usage and make sure you are correctly using the Unix/Oracle buffers.
