No HELP available

Using Oracle 8i, with the HELP table filled via the default script (helpins):

SQL> help select
SP2-0172: No HELP available.

And yet:

SQL> help accept

 ACCEPT

 [snip]

How do I get the SQL help loaded, like we used to have with Oracle7?
