8.0.5 install on Mandrake Linux

Am trying to get 8.0.5 server running on Linux Mandrake 6.0...

I have the glibc patch, but when installing it, I get an ld error:

/usr/i386-glibc20-linux/bin/ld.real Cannot allocate 1 bytes after allocating 0 bytes
collect2: ld returned 1 exit status

and this repeats itself each time gmake tries to make a new program

The patch required installing the compat- packages.... & they seem to be right....

any clues
