create simple types?

Hello,

I apologize if this is the wrong forum for this, but I wish to create a simple type (as opposed to an OBJECT) in oracle EE 8.1.5. I guess a more correct term for what I'm trying to do is alias a new type to an existing type. If this is even possible, could I get a syntax example? Other resources seem to be dry on this subject.
