How well do the new automated features work on 8.1.5?

• I assure you that it works very well. Please note that many people do not fully understand the differences between opening the database in "Managed recovery mode" and "Open Read Only" compared to "Open read write". Remember that once that Standby database is opened in any mode except "Managed Recovery", then you will be responsible for manually shipping the archived logs from the primary database.

but I have found nothing that explains what happens when things go wrong (E.g., on of the boxes goes down, network failure, etc.).

• Oracle8i Uses Net8 internal overlay to transfer archived redologs between primary and standby databases. If the primary Database goes down and you do not have access to your archive_dest, then all what you can do is open your standby Read only. Try to boot your primary box. If you can access it then you can ship any missing archivedlogs to your standby box, then restart it recovering up to your last committed transaction.
• Network failure will cause the archived redologs not to be shipped from the primary Database to the Standby database, hence you will need to copy your archived logs to a removable media, then transfer them to your Standby.

Is there anyone with standby deployed on NT using 8.1.5 that can give a critique?

• I've implemented over 20 Oracle8i Standby databases on both UNIX & NT without any problems. Actually you can write scripts to automate the process including Power failure and network failure situations discussed earlier.

? In general, will version 8.1.5 be easy to migrate from 7.3?

• Database Migration is an integral part of Oracle Universal Installer introduced in Oracle8i. This tool will automatically detected any existing Databases when installing Oracle8i, then it will prompt you if you want to migrate them. The whole process is in GUI and is very simple.
