You can easly connect through the Internet because Net 8 supports TCP/IP. Since Net 8 supports encryption and cryptographic checksums your data should be (almost) safe. Besides this you can use Connection Manager to limit the access to you database to certain clients (based on IP address).

BTW: This are all measures to make it harder to get to your data, but not impossible...
