portable way to find log_archive_dest in Oracle 7 and 8i?

Since Oracle 8i changed log_archive_dest to log_archive_dest_n, what is the way to find log_archive_dest that works both on Oracle 7 and 8i?

In Oracle 8.1.6 that I tested,
V$ARCHIVE_DEST is a synonym to V_$ARCHIVE_DEST V_$ARCHIVE_DEST is view based on V$ARCHIVE_DEST Do you have the infinite looping issue here?
