If you have the server edition on multiple processors you only have any OS based load balancing.
You can't use any parallel query feature including parallel recovery. For Oracle 8 (I'm not talking Oracle 8i) the difference roughly is
no parallel query
no parallel server
no advanced replication
no objects option
no partition option
no RMAN
So the price difference is explained by missing out a whole lot of 'features'
