Hi folks,

I ran into a similar problem with Solaris v2.6 & Oracle 8.0.5......

An offline backup process had a well-hidden step to force the database down (shutdown abort) if the database didn't come down quietly with shutdown immediate.

upon restart, the ARCH process would NOT start..... By turning off the automatic archiving (and I temporarily took the system out of archivelog to prevent hanging when if uses all its logs), the system would come up quickly, etc.

There's obviously a reason why this is occurring, but it's just not clicking with me tonight....

ALL help is greatly appreciated.

john
