I appreciate the feedback. Right after my last posting, my Oracle analyst finally did some more searching and came up with the following known bug:

BUG 881360 PL/SQL DOES NOT SUPPORT THE UNNESTING SYNTAX WITH TABLE(EXPR) Unfortunately, it doesn't look like it was fixed in 8.1.6 (according the list of fixed bugs).
