First of all, are you installing 8i in a different Oracle Home (recommended as long as you have another version on the same Server). Secondly, I'm not certain, but the messages you pasted in your message may mean that you haven't set your display and enabled logins from clients by issuing the xhost + command. Looks like the Installer GUI is attempting to start but you will get a lot of text instead of the GUI interface if the Display isn't set properly.
