I tried all your suggestions (thanks for them) but nothing seemed to be missing. The initsar3 file has a reference to a
$ORACLE_HOME/admin/pfile/configsar3.ora file which contains
db_name=sar3. Finally shutdown the database manually using svrmgr and restarted sar1 and sar3. Now dbadmnin which is the owner of oracle can login to sar3 using sqlplus but none of the users can do that. I find that some of the files in
$ORACLE_HOME is owned by nobody. Can this be a problem?
