Database Creation

I am trying to create an oracle database.  I use
startup nomount with a pfile specified.  The
system turns arround and give me an ORA-27146
post/wait initialization failed error.  I hear it
may have something to do with the kernel
parameters on my Sun 4500.  Can anyone help with
ideas or what I can check?  Please let me know.
