I totally agree with the McGraw-Hill book being essential.

For the clearest command reference you should at least look at Q-file http://www.q-file.com This does not replace the other books but complements them.

As as new user I found the Sams Become an Oracle 8 Developer in 21 days useful. Primarily for complete beginners

The other is Oracle 8 The complete reference published by McGraw Hill under
Oracle Press this is an essential book especially for the clear command reference at the back.
