Serial# changing

On O 8.0.5, I'm looking at v$session to track a session (actually we want to
kill the session).  The connection logon_time is 4 days ago, and the SID
stays the same, but the serial# keeps increasing (so we can't kill it,
because it changes).  I've never seen this before; I thought a connection
retains its SID & serial# for the life of the connection.  Can anyone help
me?  TIA
