Column formating in tables

What is the best way to format column output for numbers? At the moment I am using a to_char(fieldname,'999990.000') in SQL statements. Is there any way I can include this in the create table command instead so I only have to do this once? I have had a look in the documentation but all I seem to be able to find out about is constraints.

Cheers
Gordon
