Oracle MTS v/s Java connection pooling

I know what Oracle MTS is. I don't know much about Java connection pooling. How does one decide whether to use Oracle MTS or Java connection pooling ? If Oracle comes with MTS and can be implemented without any coding by application programmers, I don't see why anyone would use Java connection pooling, unless it has some clear advantages over MTS. What are the advantages ?
