How can I fix my control file?

Dear Oracle Experts,

I am working on a development database, ORACLE 7.3 on NT server. I went to the control files and lined up all the path strings neatly, and then pressed SAVE. I didn't think anything of it, but since then my database will not start. The STARTUP MOUNT PFILE = '<PATH\init.ora>' command could not find the init file. I opened up the control files again in Notepad. Most of the file is in jibrish, but only the parts I changed are neatly visible in Notepad. Why??? I must have messed up the control file. How can I fix it??

I temporarily went passed this problem by copying the init file to the default path %ORACLE_HOME%\DATABASE\init.ora. But, this problem still needs to be resolved ASAP.

I will greatly appreciate any and all response from this posting. If you need more details, please ask.

Thanks Again,
Elizabeth L.
