I understand what you are saying; I carry out those sorts of disaster tests
all the time, using the same method:
Tape backup/ restore.
The method for recovering from software and hardware failures, contingencies, and disasters is basically the same, although admittedly, NT can be picky about restoring using a different SCSI controller. I solve this by standardizing on a few hardware configurations.
For most of my installations there are just too many products installed on the server - a reinstall is just out of the question.
