I'm running three 8.1.5 instances on Solaris 2.6 and they've been up without any problems for more than two continuous months. However ... Just one processor for now, straightforward databases, all connections are TCP/IP, not running in archivelog mode since these are test instances. Your situation may be more complicated.

As far as production goes I have three 8.1.5 instances running an NT servers. And in a few weeks I plan to start moving half a dozen more of our 7.3.4 instances to 8.1.5. All these instances range from 15 to 30G so yours may well be a lot larger.

Most of the problems I see are on our Novell servers and they're usually not caused by Oracle. They're caused by oddball Novell abends.
