Help needed on creating a duplicate database for test purposes

I have to copy an existing database (on the same host) for test
purposes.  Can I do the following to achieve it:



    
  
  1.   Close the source database.

  
  2.   Make O/S copies of all files to the new location.

  
  3.   Recreate my control files.






I have not tried it.  Just wanted to run by someone who has done this
before and know what I am missing here.  Thanks.
