Thats a big question to answer...so what follows may be redundant but:

  1. ensure /etc/system is set correctly for shared memory
  2. ensure 'oracle' (or whatever account you are using) is doing the install, not root
  3. ensure oracle has read/write on the high level directory under which you are installing
  4. ensure oracle has read/write on any directory into which datafiles will be installed (their locations will be prompted for during the install process)
