We are considering making a second, historical copy of our production database for Read-Only access.
Some have expressed concerns as to the cost of EMC disk, and we are looking into Optical storage for our Oracle Tablespaces.

We expect every month to move historical production data to optical storage.
We expect we would need to implement partitioning in order to make this a viable solution.

Is this a feasible solution?

We are an Oracle 8.0 user on Solaris 2.6

Does anyone have any experiences with Read-Only Tablespaces? What Software are you using in addition to Oracle software? What Hardware?
Are you using Oracle partitioning to manage your read-only tablespaces?

What performance implications are there in using read-only tablespaces? What administrative implications?

Thanks for your help.
