  Thanks for your response. Further info:

	Oracle 8.0.5
	RH Linux kernel 2.2.5-15
	$ORACLE_HOME/lib is in path
	     and this contains the following:
		libclntsh.so
		libclntsh.so.1.0
		libclntsh.so.1.0.pre-glibcpatch

  I think that the best for this Oracle and Linux newbie is to trash the install and begin again. I have the time [two days off work]. There may have been errors when running the patch. I may also have installed too much. I think that I will back off and just install the libraries and server 8.0.5 the next go around and then add additional elements if that works.

  If you have any other ideas please jump in.
