Help! Changing Instances

Hello

When I try c:>set instance 2:pds (or smt, which is my other instance), it seems to take, but it still works with the value in the registry. If I delete that registry value, then I can not connect to either instance in svrmgr30 (I get a TNS could not resolve name error). the command "set instance=pds" or "set instance pds" works the same as the "set instance 2:pds" command from the command line, but none seem to affect operation in svrmgr30. Also, none of those commands will take in svrmgr30, either before or after connecting.

Any ideas how I connect to a different instance other than that in the registry.
