I've seen problems with backup programs before where the backup software tries to access an Oracle file, the database is open, so the file is in use and the backup software then can't deal with this and bombs out. Is this what's happening here?

I've also seen it the other way round, where the database has been fairly idle, so the backup software can lock the datafile for backup. A log switch then occurs and the DB says it cant access the DB and takes it offline, assuming it needs to be recovered.

Can your software definately handle the fact that the DB is open? What happens if you shut down the DB and then try the backup?

Regards
