What do you get for NLS_CHARACTERSET in SELECT * FROM FROM
NLS_DATABASE_PARAMETERS?



If it is US7ASCII which I believe is default for Linux, you have to change
it.


My problems were solved when I changed the character set to WE8ISO8859P1.
