Whoever told you this doesn't have a clue.

I know of at least 3 sites with 3000+ users, 1100 of which are concurrent. They use our 2-tier product, and all the users connect to one Sun server. (OK, on one site the server's got six procs and two gig of RAM, but hey, we're talking 1100 concurrent users).
