I'm sorry that I don't have any other concrete ideas, just some hints:

• do you use any external procedure/shared library ? We had some memory problems with it (but not as big as yours).
• there is an excellent script of monitoring possible configuration and speed problems. Look at http://www.ipass.net/~davesisk/oont.htm

And I will ask some excellent dba's today,
